Professional business logo

A professional design is essential for creating a strong brand identity and developing a lasting market presence. Design basics

The name of your business

There are a few questions you need to ask yourself about how your business name should appear in your logo:

• do you want to present your name entirely in capitals? For example, MMC DESIGN or MMC Limited
• do you want to show your incorporation status? For example, Limited or Ltd
• do you want to show an abbreviation of the business name? For example, MJR rather than Michael J Rees
• do you have any unique spellings or punctuation? For example, Xperienced Electricians/Contractors

Tagline or Strapline

Some businesses include a phrase or statement to better describe their business. This may be particularly useful if your company name does not describe the business function, but it is not a requirement and is really up to you. An example of a strapline could be "POSH Gifts - the definition of good taste".

Logo Style

There are generally two styles of logo to choose from:

1. Logotype - the primary element of the logo design is the company name, using font, colours and style embellishments to portray your brand;

2. Symbol - the primary element of the logo design is an illustration or image, followed by the business name to the side or beneath. The image is often used to portray the personality or nature of products/services you sell.

Text Font

There are thousands of font types to choose from and it should be used to reflect the personality of your business. The two basic font families are:

1. Sans Serif Fonts- these are used in a larger percentage of logos. They tend to be modern looking with rounded edges and are considered easy to read. Examples of Sans Serif fonts are Arial, Tahoma and Verdana.

2. Serif Fonts- these tend to be more classical and traditional. Examples of Serif fonts are Courier, Garamond and Times New Roman.

To determine which font types you like it is a good idea to type your business name into a Microsoft Word file and then change the fonts. But remember that there are thousands of fonts available and Word does not display them all.

Colours

It is important to pick the colour for the right reason, and not just because it is your favourite colour. Many businesses pursue a general trend; for example, a large number of garden businesses will lean towards green, whilst in IT there is a leaning towards blue. Each of these colours also portrays the personality of the business: a bright colour (orange or red) portrays friendly and approachable, whilst blue might be perceived as more aggressive. However, blue with green could be perceived as modern. Also, remember that you want your audience to remember you. Keeping the design simple will assist that, but also using less than three colours will aid ease of recall.
